Rooted
October - November 2022
Curated by Julea Seliavski and Yéjidé Washington
Rooted, a special exhibition at the National Slavic Museum, uncovers the ways in which craft-based material creates a mapping of history. Whether through the use of Contemporary fiber work or historical needlepoint design, the ways in which our ancestors and present artists use these materials to root themselves in the present in order to create a map for the future. The exhibition showcases the work of Tinglan Huang, a contemporary artist who showcases her Chinese roots through her tapestry weaving, and Katrina Sánchez Standfield, an interdisciplinary Panamanian-American artist best known for her Magnified Weavings. The exhibition pairs the contemporary work with historical artifacts from the National Slavic Museum to contextualize what it means to use craft-based materials to cope with a present. How can we as individuals root ourselves in the present to establish our futures?
